He wanders around clutching old biros, brown paper bags and talking to strangers.
But if a man fitting that description approaches you, you're not about to be tapped up for a cuppa by a tramp.

Instead, you're likely to be asked to sit for one of the world's most unusual portrait artists.

Armley's Mik Artistik has spent years roaming around and asking people if they would like to be "bagged."

Mik is a street artist who can turn out a caricature of someone – on a brown paper bag – in minutes.

In 25 years of drawing, he says he has "bagged" thousands of people from Castleford to California.

The grandad-of-one said he drew his first pictures when he was four, doodling in his mum's Women's Own magazines. The 53-year-old later used his skill at art to keep the school bullies at bay, drawing them pictures to bribe them not to beat him up.

After leaving school, he drifted from job to job, before securing a place at art college in Bradford in the mid-1970s.
But it was to be another few years before the big moment that led him a career in bags.

"I was in a laundrette with a friend," he said. "I drew a likeness of her with a biro. I remember thinking 'How the hell did I do that?' It was wonderful, and I decided I would make a living as a portrait artist.

"I challenged myself to go to Seacroft, where I asked this big bloke in a pub if he wanted drawing. Thankfully he liked it, and before I knew it a queue had formed."

The paper bag idea came later, when Mik was in a shop in his native Ireland. "I was trying to sober up this old drunken poet and get him home. I saw the bags on the counter and thought 'I wonder if I can sell someone a paper bag.'
"I approached a big fella in the pub again and he gave me a few quid for the picture.

"That was 25 years ago and here I am, still going."
Unusual requests include one from a man who wanted Mik to bag an image of the industrial accident he had suffered.
The artist also once bagged a gang of muggers, drawings which led to them being arrested and convicted.

As well as the drawing, Mik fronts a band, Mik Artistik's Ego Trip, and will play Glastonbury Festival tomorrow.
