Should Tory leader David Cameron ever want to try his hand at boxing, a trip to Armley might be in order...

New Wortley Conservative Club has become home to Rebel's Gym where Danny Thornton and fellow coaches teach the noble art.

Danny rents the upper floor of the red-brick premises in Oldfield Lane from the club.

And while he may be no Tory himself, he says that should Mr Cameron ever call in at the jab centre he'd be made more than welcome.

The political heavyweight could even try on a pair of gloves, says Danny.

"I expect he'd want to be in the blue corner."

Twenty-nine-year-old Danny has built the gym himself, with the help of his dad, Martin.

They've fitted showers, laid the floor and even built an office. There's the ring, of course, the bruised leather bags, bulging gloves aplenty, plus all the other boxing and fitness equipment required of a thriving gym.

More importantly though is the enthusiasm and experience offered by the coaches.

Danny himself has boxed 40 times as a pro since joining the paid ranks at 18, mostly at middleweight.

Last time out was a win in February.

Working alongside him, is former British welterweight champion Derek Roche, 35, whose nickname, The Rebel, has been adopted by the gym.

The gym's full title is Rebel's Gym @ Camp Detox.

Danny and Derek are joined by Rob Stevenson, 37, who fought 51 times as a pro, including once against Derek.

While the gym trains professional fighters, there are also separate sessions for a growing number of young amateurs under the watchful eye of seasoned coach Terry O'Neill.

The club is now seeking affiliation with the amateur authorities and intends to be known as West Leeds ABC.

Terry, who enjoyed huge success as a pro coach, said he expected the amateurs to be competing by 2009 and added: "In the next three or four years, we'll have national champions. I've returned to the amateurs because I want to put something back into the sport that has given me so much."

Danny said: "It was always my dream to open a boxing gym. It's been hard work and I've put my money into it. We're here now.

"We're now hoping to bring in more and more local youngsters because I know the benefit that boxing can have on the lives of young lads. I'm living proof of that. It was boxing that put me on the right tracks and kept me out of trouble."

The gym number is 07753 803209.
