Armley's own Interplay is performing Precious Bane which tells the tale of Prue Sarn, a young woman with a cleft palate – also known as a harelip – who is viewed with hostility by superstitious locals in the early 19th century.

Actress Sally Ann Ramage had a cast made of her face and mouth to create a prosthesis so that she looked the part.

The 24-year-old said: "I thought wearing the prosthesis would be much harder, but usually I forget that I've got it in until I see the audience's reaction."

Former Wortley High School pupil, Tanja Bage plays Prue's best friend, the beautiful Jancis Beguildy.

She said: "I grew up in Armley and still live there, so I've known about Interplay's work for years."

Precious Bane will be performed at Interplay's HQ on Armley Ridge Road on December 16 and 17 before touring nationally to schools and theatres.

Tickets are £5. Ring (0113) 2638556.
