Residents of a New Wortley housing estate are celebrating a road safety victory.
A 20mph speed limit is to be imposed across the Dragon Drive estate in New Wortley where five injury accidents have happened in recent years.

Locals had complained of cars speeding through their streets being a danger to pedestrians.

Now the 20mph message will be driven home by signs designed by local schoolchildren.

Leeds City Council had already introduced other traffic calming features.

Coun Stuart Andrew, lead member for transport, said: "The estate sits between two busy roads and many drivers go too fast through the area. As a result there have been a number of accidents in the last few years, and residents are concerned that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.

"Local people have campaigned hard to get something done. We have taken action in the past by installing speed bumps in the area but I am delighted we are now in a position to go one step further with the creation of this 20mph zone.

"This will send a message to drivers that they should drive carefully through residential areas such as this and that message will be reinforced by signs designed by local youngsters."
