Legendary cricket umpire Dickie Bird officially opened the new Rievaulx House centre in Thornhill Road.

The hi-tech home for the elderly has its own mini cinema, the internet and and even its own hairdressing salon and nail bar.

Unveiling a commemorative plaque, Mr Bird said he was impressed with the facility and it made him wish it was closer to Barnsley, his home town.

He spent time chatting to the home's residents and joined in with a singsong.

Rievaulx House is part of several purpose-built care centres in the North West and North East of England run by Meridian Care.

It can house up to 48 residents.
